Nutty Caramel Apple Dessert

1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon apple pie spice

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 1/2 cups quick-cooking oats

1 cup firmly packed brown sugar

3/4 cup chilled butter or margarine

1 can (20 ounces) sliced pie apples, drained and coarsely chopped

1 cup chopped walnuts

1 jar (12 ounces) caramel ice cream topping

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. In a medium bowl, combine flour, baking powder, apple pie spice, and salt. Stir in oats and brown sugar. Using a pastry blender or 2 knives, cut in butter until mixture is well blended. Reserve 1 cup oat mixture. Press remaining oat mixture into bottom of a lightly greased 9 inch square baking pan. Layer apples, reserved mixture and walnuts. Drizzle with ice cream topping. Bake 30-35 minutes or until lightly browned and a toothpick inserted into cake portion comes out clean. Cool in pan on a wire rack. Cover and store in a cool place.

Yields about 12 servings

To serve: Uncover and bake in a 325 degree oven 25 minutes or until heated through. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream
